The factory was founded in 1918 as Norske Gjær- & Spritfabrikker (Norwegian yeast and alcohol factories), and from 1961 under the name Idun. From the beginning, yeast and technical alcohol were produced at the plant. From the 1930s, broth, vinegar, mustard and other foodstuffs were also produced. In 2005 Idun moved the yeast production to Sweden.
